What is Counselling?

Counselling is a form of talking therapy where you can talk to a trusted individual in a safe, confidential and non-judgmental environment. There may be something specific you would like to talk about, or you may be unable to identify how or why you're feeling the way that you're feeling. Talking to a counsellor can be very helpful in gaining clarity about your thoughts and feelings, enabling you to become more aware of yourself.

You won’t be given advice or be told what to do; counselling gives you a safe relationship where you can explore your inner world and consider taking risks in your external one. It provides you with another point of view on your own unique experience.

You may have specific goals; your counsellor will be there to support you in aiming to achieve these. You can also learn helpful tools which you can use outside of therapy, ultimately learning to be your own therapist through increased self-awareness and understanding.

I like the simile of counselling being like looking into a mirror; reflecting back what is seen and heard, so you can understand things more clearly.
